“As we’ve been doing the show over the years, I’ve given myself more and more space to create the character of Su Fei and make it less about my own life.” After growing up in California hearing stories about her grandparents’ and father’s escape from Nazi Europe to Shanghai, Loewenberg finally decided to move to China herself in 1996 with a teaching program, where she also learned to speak fluent Mandarin and eventually began working as a journalist.
“It was always just part of the story of my family growing up,” Loewenberg said.
Living as I do in a city as vibrant and bizarre as Beijing has its good points – and its bad.
Although exciting and unpredictable, from its fascinating culture to its mind-bending language, it’s certainly not an ideal place to find long-term love, no matter how beautiful, smart, successful and hilarious you may be.
Her shtick — with nearly 3.6 million You Tube hits — has landed her in English-language Chinese papers, on the Today Show and even in a Q&A on The New Yorker’s Web site.
“I think of Su Fei as an alter ego, but I think there’s a kernel of truth in everything — there’s nothing that I would say about a relationship or I’d say about my experiences that doesn’t have some truth in it,” she told The Jewish Week in a phone interview.
Petite and eager to please, these girls are so cute I don’t blame the guys for being attracted to them.
After all, when a Chinese girl pouts, a million hearts melt; when I pout, I resemble a fish. Gorging on crispy duck and splurging on pirated copies of Downton Abbey?
But for Su Fei, a curly-haired Carrie Bradshaw look-alike whose real name is Anna Sophie Loewenberg, finding a boyfriend in Beijing isn’t easy. The women of Beijing come from all over the country, drawn for professional opportunity and a more exciting life, and the city is full of sophisticated, successful women with high standards.Men are usually expected to buy an apartment before marriage – this tends to be a cost for the man’s family as a whole to bear, another reason male births are no longer seen as the be all and end all.So at the ripe age of 30, I have given up on trying to find my Mr Right. In Beijing, even the most average Western men are able to attract pretty Chinese girls, who seem to be under the impression that they have all the style and sophistication of Daniel Craig. As a result, the streets of the city are filled with smug-looking Western guys holding hands with their pint-sized Chinese princesses.
